Prosthesis

A dental prosthesis is an element that replaces one or several dental pieces that are absent. With its utilization the patient recovers not only the eating functionality but also the dentition esthetic, achieving a normal life without any discomfort.

A fixed prosthesis consists in artificial dental pieces that are attached with a crown to the abutment teeth, which are the healthy teeth around the area with no teeth. They are previously carved and are the ones used as the piece support. These prostheses are fixed, therefore it cannot be removed. No further maintenance is required other than normal oral hygiene.

There are two types:

  • Removable complete prostheses:
    • They are used when the patient does not have any teeth. The piece contains all the artificial teeth and it is placed in the dental alveolus.
  • Removable partial prostheses:
    • Used when there are still some teeth in the mouth that can be used as retainers for the prosthesis. This piece only contains the missing teeth. This kind of prosthesis allows the patient to remove and replace it at any time.
      • For its correct hygiene only a few steps are necessary:
      • Washing them using a toothbrush and a specific prosthesis paste or cleanser after each meal.
      • Also washing the gums, tongue and inside of the mouth to eliminate all the dental plaque.
      • It is recommended to use a mouthwash every day.
      • The prosthesis must be removed at night and be placed inside a glass of water with some cleanser.

Periodontics

Periodontics consists in studying, diagnosing and treating the problems that can take place in the surrounding tooth structure (gum and bone). Our teeth can be in perfect condition although we can be having any kind of anomaly around them.

A redness of the gum can reveal gingivitis. They bleed easily and can be painful when taking cold or hot food. Fortunately this stage is reversible if the appropriate treatment is followed.

If not treated on time, gingivitis can lead to a periodontitis. This stage is not reversible since chronic irritation destroys the bone and it is unrecoverable, but this can be controlled. Periodontitis can be the cause of: - Early tooth loss – Tooth sensitivity – Bad breath – Impact of food that worsens the situation – More difficulty eating – Can affect the heart and worsen diabetes.

In order to prevent these situations we carry out a cleaning and conditioning dental treatment to avoid accumulating more tartar, leaving the root clean and healthy, and giving oral health advice that need to be strictly followed.

In some occasions the tartar is found deeply adhered and it is necessary to use anesthesia to avoid any pain.

Frequently asked questions

Normally you will feel sensitivity during the following week but there are specific mouthwashes and toothpastes for these cases.
The erosion is practically non-existent, the benefits are much larger since we prevent having serious problems.
Smoking increases the risk of suffering from periodontitis. Our advice is to stop smoking.

With orthodontics we position the teeth in the right space of the mouth. It is NOT only used for cosmetic reasons, but also to improve the chewing function. Sometimes, either because of the absence of any dental piece or because the teeth eruption hasn’t occur adequately, it can cause displacements that may result in discomfort, erosion of other pieces, etc…

Unless corrected, this problem can cause migraine, clicking of the joint, muscle pathologies and joint discomfort. It occurs because our TMJ (temporobandibular joint) makes inadequate movements that is not meant to do.

Dental hygiene also gets affected, since teeth displacement makes difficult the access to the tooth surface some areas can be neglected, generating this way the cavities.

The solution is placing small pieces in the teeth called braces, in order to straighten them towards its correct position. Remember that it is essential to have a proper oral hygiene in addition to refrain from smoking for a successful treatment.
